Spam and Comments Policy

So we’re getting slightly more spam than in the past. I’ve been deleting it fairly quickly so far. But I was wondering if I should try to set up one of those things where you have to jump through a hoop (typing a word or series of numbers or whatever) in order to comment. Anyone have an opinion? Which is more annoying — occasional spam or having to go through an extra step to comment?

  1. At this point, I'd say the extra step would be more of a drag.

But I'm not the one who has to delete the spam. From my end it hasn't been such a headache.

  2. THe captcha will help, but I think the Blogger captcha system has already been defeated by spammers.

There is a "Registered Users" option to only allow people with an OpenID account to post comments. If you have a Blogger or Google account, you're OK, because both types of accounts are part of OpenID. Commenters will have to log in once to post, though.

Unfortunately, the best solution is to find another blogging service that has a better handle on spam. Blogger is not known for actively fighting the problem.

I know WordPress offers multiple methods for fighting spammers, and it has an import feature that will bring everything from Blogger over to WordPress.com. I personally haven't used it, so I can't say with authority that it's any better than Blogger.

  3. I've done pretty well with Blogger's spam blocker, but I have about 6 readers, which may mean a lot less spam traffic comes my way.
