Your Grandpa’s Porn

Since we’re kind of having a porn week on HU (Michael Arthur’s article on yaoi here, my article on Jenna Jameson here, I thought I’d end up with this review I first published on Splice Today.

When I ordered the DVD American Nudie Classics, I had somehow thought it would be a documentary about classic (if that’s the word I want) pornography from the early days of American cinema. Or, failing that, I figured it would include a handful of porn reels along with some sort of contextual information. After all, I figured, anyone buying this is doing so out of historical interest, right?

Well, um…wrong, as it turns out. The DVD is just 40-odd more-or-less explicit 10-minute-or-under porn reels from the 30s, 40s, 50s, and 60s. No context, no explanation, no nothing. Which means that this collection is either intended primarily for a specialist audience of nostalgia hounds/antiquarian cinephiles — or else someone is buying this out of prurient motives.

So…could that be? Could someone get off by watching this thing?

Anything’s possible, of course. People are turned on by plush toys. People are turned on by Jennifer Aniston. Somewhere out there, there’s probably someone turned on by Jennifer Aniston plush toys. God help them.

But while I can imagine less likely fetishes, the films collected here have not for the most part aged especially well, at least in terms of their originally-intended purpose. The clips from the forties and fifties, in particular are positively unsettling in their drab frankness. Women in various states of undress gyrate with various degrees of enthusiasm in front of a remorselessly stationary camera. Sometimes, for variety, they wander around in a circle until you start to worry that they’re going to get dizzy and collapse before they can remove that last little bit. “Stacey Farrell #4” is as good an example as any of the type — while big band music plays, a pleasantly horse-faced woman trots about the floor with a slightly embarrassed smile and the brisk efficiency of a high school gym instructor. When her breasts come out, they seem less insouciant than functional — like she’s a bureaucrat and is pulling out a sheaf of papers for you to sign. Except maybe that “sign my papers” sounds like it could maybe be a double entendre, and the breasts are less suggestive than that.

The 30s strips are no more sensual — though they are more varied. I’m not sure why this should be. Maybe film pornographers hadn’t quite hit upon one magic formula in the 30s, and so there was more experimentation. Or maybe whoever compiled the DVD just happened to find a broader range of clips for this decade than for the others.

Whatever the reason, though, it makes the six 30s’ clips significantly more interesting to watch than the balance of the DVD. Several of them are short skits, built around standard scenarios — girl discovered sunbathing nude; nudists go out to an island where a man steals their clothes; girls pose nude for an artist. Nothing especially unexpected…but still, once you commit to narrative, you can never tell what’s going to happen. The sunbathing skit, for example, spirals off to include FTM cross-dressing and an amateur detective improbably wearing what appears to be a Hasidic beard using his magnifying glass to examine a woman’s underwear. The nudists on the island crawl through each others legs and paddle each other as they go — that light spanking being about as close as we get to kink on the disk, I think. The artist’s model skit ends up as a bizarre drawing room take on Cinderella — the artist rejects the two upper-crust girls who want to pose for him, and instead hires their servant. This prompts one of the disgusted rejects to tell her friend, “As an artist’s model, you’re a good chambermaid.” The nudity here is brief and decidedly secondary to the gag; the whole thing is so tame that it hardly feels like pornography at all.

In contrast, the preceding film is surprisingly frank. Called “Room Service,” it lasts only about a minute and a half — just long enough to show a woman penetrating her female partner with a dildo and then engaging in oral sex.

In context, “Room Service” (“or” as the title tells us “Breakfast in Bed”) is something of a shock. It’s easily the most explicit thing on the disc, a brief flash of hardcore in a sea of just-barely-past-R. While it gets your attention, though, it’s not any sexier, in a conventional sense, than the other 30s pictures Some of that is the brevity — you barely have a chance to be shocked before it’s over. Mostly, though, it’s the way the sex is presented. The woman being eaten out, for example, lies still with her arm thrown over her face. As a result, the act ends up feeling like a private moment rather than a performance. If there’s pleasure here, it hasn’t been packaged for the viewer; it’s not accessible.

Linda Williams, in her book Hard Core, argued that, “The animating male fantasy of hard-core cinema might […] be described as the (impossible) attempt to capture visually the frenzy of the visible in a female body whose orgasmic excitement can never be objectively measured.” “Room Service” makes no effort to capture orgasmic excitement; it’s happy enough to just show the actions without the affect. As a result, it doesn’t read as hard core, even though it’s explicit.

The clips from the 60s, though, are a different story. These films are even more repetitive and staid than the 40s and 50s ones. In virtually every one, a woman reclines on a bed, strips off her clothes, and writhes around while funky and/or jazzy music plays in the background. Occasionally, the camera zooms in for a close-up of a nipple or a lip or a crotch.

In terms of what gets shown, these aren’t any more daring than many of the strips from earlier decades…and, as I said, they’re significantly less daring than “Room Service.” Yet, the 60s films scan as recognizably porn in a way that their predecessors do not. The difference can be summed up by the word “masturbatory” — not in terms of the viewers, but in terms of the actresses. The women in the 60s clips lick their lips, they rub themselves — and then they lick their lips again. They mug for the camera — they perform. And as it turns out (and as Linda Williams suggested), what makes a modern porno a modern porno isn’t so much the nudity as the pretense of orgasm.

Linda Williams argues that the development of a pornographic fascination with female orgasm was perhaps a positive thing. Any “nostalgia for [old stag films] must also partake of a nostalgia for an age when male spectators of pornography could take their pleasure in investigating the woman without having to worry much about her pleasure,” she wrote Maybe that’s so…though, on the other hand (and as I’m sure Williams would acknowledge) the demand that women not only present their wares but enjoy doing so seems like it might have a downside as well. Part of the reason “Stacey Farrell” doesn’t read as sexy is because she ‘s so obviously going through the motions — which, decades ago, seems to have been sufficient. “Farrell” could keep a bland, cheerful autonomy without pretending her soul was touched — which maybe meant it wasn’t.

But whether it’s better not to care about women’s pleasure or better to care and demand it’s presentation on demand, one thing is clear — preferences have changed. The earlier clips aren’t unsexy because folks back then didn’t know how to do sexy; they’re unsexy because what they thought of as sexy was different. People’s fantasies were tied up in a genre — and both the genre and the fantasies are different now. There’s something eerie about that realization. Desire seems like such a private thing. But when you watch these films it’s hard not to wonder how much of what you want is what you want, and how much of it is just the arbitrary concupiscence of the decade in which you happen to be wanting.

Although I haven’t seen this reel (and I don’t really watch any porn), the question of the male gaze in relation to woman-on-woman activity came up because of Proust’s fascination with lesbianism. I recently discussed this aspect of Proust with Elisabeth Ladenson, author of “Proust’s Lesbianism” and your comment “If there’s pleasure here, it hasn’t been packaged for the viewer; it’s not accessible” in respect to the clip “Room Service” seems to bear on this discussion. Typically, in this type of porn there is a man in the room in the film. The erotic spectacle seems to require the male be represented as a surrogate for the viewer of the film. I wonder if the screening conditions of forties cinematic pornography somehow made up for this absence on screen by the presence of the projectionist? Without the male presence the women might not be performing for the male, which is I think the quality that the rest of the clips presents, far less ambiguously; they model, they pose in the narrative.
    What Proust’s Marcel was doing is a whole other story…

Gone is fabulous Jean Harlow of the thirties, only to be replaced by good girls who aspire to marriage and babies such as Donna Reed, Maureen O’Hara. The sexual imagination is repressed, which one might like to think resulted in other manifestations of excess and escapism, but seems actually to leave women numb.

  2. I think it’s less that the male viewer isn’t represented than that the tropes which indicate the male viewer aren’t developed? There’s lots of lesbian porn where there’s no man present, but it’s still clearly staged.

    That’s interesting about the parallels with representations of women in mainstream cinema; I hadn’t thought of that.

  3. I think we have to be careful about what we call two women together in pornographic images. Could one say that porn for men allows that the male viewer might be invited to join “heterosexual” females who are performing for his pleasure? I wonder if this dynamic is the same if one claims that the women are actually “lesbian,” or whether same-sex desire is too exclusive to be male pornography?
    I read your interview with Sharon Marcus, who looked with her own lesbian gaze at women often erotically posed together in fashion magazines. Marcus could not definitively determine the function of these images. In the case of paired women in fashion magazines, often in extreme styles, I think that the mirroring of the females represents a socialization of what is appropriate for women who remain hobbled by lingering anxieties as to how far they can go in sexual self-representation. An image of a single woman does not sanction the transgressive nature of say a hyper-mini skirt or a see-through blouse, but two women give permission for the normalization of extreme gestures of sexuality.
    Clothing is a frame to accentuate areas of the body that wants attention, which is why I like the whole artist movie theme and without seeing the film, the fake beard and stealing of clothes are hilarious, and so imaginative.

    I think “replaced” is probably not strictly true: there were still “fabulous” women in cinema in the ’50s. Elizabeth Taylor’s probably the most familiar…Hayworth’s Salome, Simmons’ Virinia, most of Sirk’s women, many of Dorothy Lamour’s parts…it’s just that the repressed archetype gained a lot of currency and the more fabulous woman became exoticized. And, of course, in comedy especially, the exotic woman often gets “tamed” by marriage.

    Doesn’t disprove your actual point, just wanted to stick up for the ’50s a bit!

  5. Marguerite, I think I’d be reluctant to see fashion tied entirely to women’s victimization, which is sort of where you’re going. Marcus argues that desiring other women is a way for women to enjoy objectifying — it’s a way to experiment with empowerment. I also think there’s something to be said about the doubling in fashion imagery and what Irigary says about women and women’s pleasure always being two, not one….I haven’t really worked that through yet, though.

    In terms of same-sex desire and male pornography…I think it depends. For someone like Marston (the creator of Wonder Woman), lesbian desire which excludes men is I think part of the erotic charge — it ties into male masochism, and gives him an erotic stake in feminism as well as lesbianism. That’s not unsquicky…but it’s not necessarily all downside either.

  6. Hmm… could it be that ‘Room Service’ was made for a Lesbian clientele? I have no idea whether Lesbians go in for that sort of vicarious erotica…but it might explain the absence of a male.

    One aspect of woman-on-woman erotica produced for the male gaze; it eliminates the threatening presence of a male rival.

    I think eliminating the male rival is one possible point of interest. Also…I think there’s a frisson in identifying with (both) women, just as in BL there’s a frisson with identifying with (both) men….
