  1. Metallica were under heavy influence from Bands like Budgie, so that goes ok with me. I just can´t get Deep Purple´s and Uriah Heep´s relation to the NWOBHM…except that they´re from the UK. Even formed before the peak of the NWOBHM either, Judas Priest would have fitted the intention much better. Also missing all girl band (!) Girlschool as well as Def Leppard and the great Witchfynde. And I can´t believe that Venom are not mentioned at all…hint: Black Metal. But kudos for Angel Witch.

  2. Venom’s great; I think of them as actually black metal rather than NWOBHM. Girlschool isn’t really very good; neither’s Judas Priest, so that was kind of the problem there for me. Thought about Def Leppard; don’t have Witchfynde unfortunately.

Deep Purple and Uriah Heep are both protoNWOBHM, it seems like to me.

Metallica’s most direct NWOBHM influence are actually probably Diamondhead and Motorhead, I think.

But yeah, I’m always a little erratic with this kind of thing, I have to admit….

  3. Ok then, squabbling about subgenres: Blitzkrieg, which were also featured on Metallica´s NWOBHM compilation, covered “Countess Bathory” from Venom´s ‘Black Metal’ album. Relate, relate…
I just wondered that you didn´t took a chance to bridge that gap, after the enthronement of Neil Young as godfather of black metal.
As for Girlschool, there collabo with Motörhead under the name of Motörheadgirlschool’ was fun. And back to ‘squabbling on sub genres’, Motörhead didn´t want to be labeled as NWOBHM band, they preferred the term ‘Rock `n Roll’.
Judas Priest IS a great band, just ask David Michael Tibet of Current 93.
But as it´s all a question of taste, to me Iron Maiden´s ‘Killers’ is a much better work than everything that came later on with Dickinson (though I liked his solo efforts like ‘Balls to Picasso’).
Concerning Witchfynde, I´d recommend ‘Stage Fright’. Sounds in parts like BÖC during their fire-of-unknown-origin-west-coast-rock influenced period, but you know, subgenres…

  4. I’m quite iffy on Iron Maiden too, honestly. They’re pretty boring. Maybe I’ll try Killers though….

That’s funny that Motorhead doesn’t want to be NWOBHM. They’re so metal they squabble over subgenres!

The Girlschool/Motorhead collaborations are fun; their other stuff…eh.

Honestly, I just didn’t think of Venom. They’re great; if I do another NWOBHM mix someday, I’ll probably put them on.

  5. is your blasphemy against Maiden just an attempt to ruffle some feathers? i mean Come ON.

Good choice with the Angel Witch though.

  6. There’s no law that says you have to like Iron Maiden. I’m just wondering what parallel universe exists in which they’re Boring.
I like Uriah Heep a lot too, but i don’t have any more special feeling for them than any of the other early 70s proto-metal bands that use a lot of Hammond Organ. They all kind of blend together to me.

  7. I don’t see how Uriah Heep’s first album can blend in with anything. It is one of the most insane pieces of pop music I think I’ve ever heard. Crazy giant towering prog arrangements that make Rush look tasteful and restrained, trashy lyrics about single combat with gypsy fathers, soaring vocals like the singer wants to be Freddie Mercury — they are so great.
