Best Music of the Year…So Far

SZA_08-15-2013

I asked what folks were listening to way back towards the beginning of the year. We’re 6 or 7 months further on…so what do you all think are the best albums of the year?

Here’s a couple of my picks:

I’m really into this awesome twisted space death metal by Artificial Brains.

SZA’s alt R&B floaty psych soul is great:

I’m just now falling in love with this Open Mike Eagle track:

Jason Eady is the best country album I’ve heard this year:

And I really do love the new Sunny Day in Glasgow album, Sea When Absent

So what about you all? What’s your best album of the year so far?

  1. Technically Because the Internet dropped in December, and NerhuvianDOOM hasn’t come out yet, so I’m stuck.

  2. I’ve been mostly filling in the categlog for my Brazilian Song of the Day project, so the 2014 albums list is sparse. The best of them is Lydia Loveless, whose sophmore Bloodshot album, Something Else (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3XyKhTwk9X8).

But the real surprise for me is how much I listen to Michel Teló’s singles. Ai Se Eu Te Pego is everything that’s great about a pop song—catchy, fun, not too serious. And it has accordion. Because that’s the way sertanejo rolls. It wasn’t a big hit until Neymar and his Santos teammates made up dance moves they did before games. When video of their warm-up leaked to youtube, the song became a huge international hit. Kind of like if Abba was discovered because Bjorn Borg was seen dancing to Waterloo before matches. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcm55lU9knw&list=RDhcm55lU9knw
