I like Cathy too

Shaenon Garrity discusses great moments from TCJ history, or at least moments from TCJ history:

When TCJ interviews Robert Crumb, you know he’s going to say something mind-blowing, like that he really enjoys Cathy

Yeah, Cathy‘s not bad. For all I know, Robert Crumb likes it a lot more than I do, or possibly he likes it a bit less. But at least now I’ve got some sort of cover.

  1. All right, I admit, I'm shocked. You like Cathy? Really? What about it?

I've always found it really irritating…but perhaps there was some golden age period I missed….

  2. Seemed like it was pretty accurate about how a certain group of women think and behave, and I tend to like people who make fun of their own kind. I also like that someone could be such a crude artist and still do a strip that works.

It's been a while since I saw Cathy, so maybe you're right about the golden age. But I remember that when I saw the strip, it would make me laugh. A comic strip doesn't need to do much for me to like it. I look at it, enjoy it or not, and then move on to something else.

Since I'm getting defensive, I'll note here that Charles Schulz also liked the strip, or at least he liked Cathy Guisewitz. So I possibly have something in common with both Robert Crumb and Charles Schulz — wow.

  3. Schulz was also a big fan of For Better or Worse, which always left me cold…I actually like Cathy better since it delivered the occasional laugh. I'm not a big Cathy fan, but I can see the appeal to people whose lives it mocks/mirrors
